Movember: Let’s Talk About Men’s Mental Health

For more than twenty years, Movember has encouraged men to grow a moustache to start conversations about men’s health. What started with a focus on physical health including prostate and testicular cancer, grew to include every aspect of men’s health. That of course, includes men’s relationships and mental health.
For many men, talking about personal challenges including our mental health is difficult. We’ve been taught that we need to have all of the answers, solve all of the problems, and only ever give help, not receive it. But these ideas are deadly.
They lead to men avoiding healthcare checkups and treatment, breaking down relationships, and contribute to the suicide rate among Canadian men being roughly three times higher than the rate in women.
As you watch the conversation about men’s health growing on the lips of our community this month, remember that there are things that everyone can do to support men’s physical and mental health:
Talk about it. Share what’s on your mind with someone you trust.
Stay active and connected. Movement and social connection help reduce stress.
Rest and recharge. Sleep, nutrition, and downtime all matter.
Reach out. Professional support can make all the difference.
Men qualify for support from all of the programs at CMHA Grey Bruce.
We are also proud to host local supports specifically for men including:
Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse – Free, confidential counselling for men 18 + who have experienced sexual abuse or violence. Virtual and in-person sessions available.
My Dad’s Group – A free, group-based program for fathers and father-figures. Build stronger parenting skills and connect with other dads in a supportive space.
Men’s Partner Assault Response (PAR) – A 12-session program that helps men explore beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours related to violence and relationships.

This Movember, we must ask the men in our lives how they’re doing and check in on our friends, coworkers, and family. A simple conversation can open the door to help and healing and you might be the positive encouragement a man needs to finally reach out for support.
