Tess’s Kitchen: Three Years of Compassion
Feb 9, 2026
The Wiarton Free Meal Program recently marked its third anniversary, celebrating three years of connection, care, and community support for people who may be experiencing food insecurity, loneliness, or mental health challenges.
The program began in February 2023 with a vision from Tess Ayles, who believed everyone deserved access to a warm, nutritious meal and a welcoming place to gather. Tess worked closely with local churches, volunteers, and the Canadian Mental Health Association Grey Bruce to bring that vision to life at The Green House in Wiarton.
After Tess passed away in May 2024, the program was lovingly renamed Tess’s Kitchen in her honour. Today, her spirit continues through the many volunteers and community partners who make the program possible.
Meals are prepared and served every Monday and Wednesday morning without exception, including holidays. Volunteers provide home cooked, nutritious meals, and additional meals are delivered to individuals who are unable to attend in person. For many, Tess’s Kitchen has become more than a meal. It is a place to connect, feel welcomed, and be part of a community.
CMHA Grey Bruce is proud to work alongside the Community Outreach Program and to host the program at its Berford Street location in Wiarton. The success of Tess’s Kitchen is made possible through the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of community partners, including support from the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, Community Foundation Grey Bruce, local businesses, churches, service organizations, and individuals. The program has also received significant support from the Rotary Club of Wiarton.

Public Health requirements are met through trained volunteers, and confidentiality and dignity remain central to how the program operates. Meal planning is handled by volunteer teams, with a shared goal of offering meals that are both nourishing and comforting.
As Tess’s Kitchen enters its fourth year, the program stands as a powerful reminder of what is possible when a community comes together with compassion and care. Tess’s dream lives on in every meal served and every connection made.
