3rd Annual Walk for Courage Campaign Set for July 20th, 2024

Owen Sound, ON – CMHA Grey Bruce is proud to announce the 3rd Annual Walk for Courage, set to take place on Saturday, July 20th, 2024. This event, held at Owen Sound Fitness and Training, aims to raise funds and awareness for mental health services, with registration opening at 9:00 am and the 5km walk commencing at 9:30 am.

The Story of the Walk for Courage: A Tribute to Jeffrey Courage
In 2019, the Courage family’s world was forever changed when they lost their oldest son, Jeffrey, to suicide. This heartbreaking event underscored the urgent need for comprehensive mental health services and greater awareness. To honour Jeffrey’s memory and to prevent similar tragedies, the Courage family partnered with CMHA Grey Bruce to establish the Walk for Courage in 2022.

“The Walk for Courage is more than a yearly fundraiser,” shared Tawnia Courage, Jeffrey’s mother and one of the event organizers. “It’s a gathering where we honour the memory of those we’ve lost to suicide and stand with those who are struggling. We want to make sure that no one has to face their struggles alone.”

Funds raised from the event directly support essential mental health programs offered by CMHA Grey Bruce. These programs among others include Mental Health First Aid, SafeTALK (Suicide Alertness for Everyone), and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), which equip community members with the skills to recognize and respond effectively to mental health crises.

“Every step we take helps to build a stronger community,” said Stephen Musehl, CEO of CMHA Grey Bruce. “The Courage family’s dedication to support mental health is inspiring, and we are incredibly grateful for their partnership.”

This year’s walk promises to be a powerful event, bringing together participants from all walks of life to share their stories and support each other.

“The support from local businesses in Grey Bruce has been amazing,” said Greg Courage, Jeffrey’s father and one of the event organizers. “Thanks to the business community, not only have we received financial donations, but we will also be able to offer prizes and hold bucket draws at the walk.” Greg added, “If you are not able to attend in person but would still like to show your support, please reach out.”
