SafeTALK
Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Grey Bruce offers suicide response training called SafeTALK, developed by LivingWorks Canada. This training is about three hours in duration and prepares anyone over the age of 15 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help to stay safe. Alert helpers know how to use these opportunities to support that desire for safety.
Goals & Objectives:
SafeTALK helps participants become alert to suicide. Suicide-alert people are better prepared to connect those with thoughts of suicide to life-affirming help. SafeTALK participants will learn to:
- Notice and respond to situations where suicide thoughts may be present.
- Recognize that invitations for help are often overlooked.
- Move beyond the common tendency to miss, dismiss, and avoid suicide.
- Apply the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, KeepSafe.
- Know community resources and how to connect someone with thoughts of suicide to these resources for further suicide-safer help.
